My Giving Story: Madison Coleman

My Giving Story is about teaching my students the value of literacy. I am able to share stories with my students that reflect their own life and experiences and I am able to share with them stories of individuals whose life is drastically different than theirs. By doing that, they are able to see that literacy opens up an entirely new world for them. Jason Reynolds said, “Reading is an opportunity for you to know that you are not alone and you don’t have to feel ashamed about who you are and if you are reading a book outside of yourself you also know that you don’t have to be afraid of who you’re not”.

My Giving Story is about integrating acts of service into my lessons. The service projects that my students have had the opportunity to participate in magically tie into whatever we are learning at the time. Not only are they able to serve, but they are able to see real-life application of what we are learning. For example, my students participated in the Gratitude Project. They wrote letters to staff members and practiced writing with a purpose, which is what we were going over in class.

My Giving Story is about showing my students that their stories matter. I tell my students that they matter and by sharing with them the amazing opportunity that the Leaders Readers Network is giving us, I am able to SHOW them that they matter. Individuals outside of their circle care enough about them to help them succeed.

Thank you for allowing me to participate in the Leaders Readers Network and sharing the value of literacy with my students.
