Reading Campaigns to cultivate a love for reading
Laps for Literacy
Laps for Literacy is a reading campaign developed by The Leaders Readers Network to raise awareness and support schools to address the literacy crisis in America. Participating schools will help put literacy at the hallmark of every student by pledging laps to share a love for reading with students at Title 1 Schools. Each school year, schools work together to run or walk 60,000 laps, with read aloud opportunities, to represent and support the 60% of students growing up in low-income communities. Participants are encouraged to have family and friends pledge each lap ($1 per lap), which will be used to buy brand new books for students in disadvantaged communities. Not only does Laps for Literacy promote a love for reading and physical exercise, but it also teaches participants about the literacy gap and allows them to be part of the change for other students in America.

Pennies for Literacy
Pennies for Literacy is a “Pay It Forward Initiative” developed by The Leaders Readers Network to share a love for reading with low-income children to help further their education and success. Participating school communities are asked to collect spare change among their students and teachers in order to raise money to purchase new books for Title I schools of their choice. Throughout the month or semester, teachers incorporate warm-ups and activities to help students collect change to address the literacy crisis in America. As a “Pay it Forward Initiative,” participants share a love for reading among students from all backgrounds.
