Let’s Read Together San Antonio for the Big Give 2024
The Big Give SA is an annual event hosted by the Nonprofit Council and sponsored by The Najim Charitable Foundation, John & Florence Foundation, Genesis Wealth Management, Human Services, San Antonio Area Foundation, Wave Healthcare, Shriver Carmona, and Eskin Fundraising Training LLC. The 24 hour giving event begins on Wednesday, September 18 and ends on Thursday, September 19 at 6pm. More than 400 nonprofits are participating in this 24 hour-period of giving.
“The Leaders Readers Network programming and services is essential to educators and classrooms as we work together to provide brand new diverse and culturally relevant books, service projects, and read aloud experiences to get kids excited about reading and improve literacy outcomes. We’ve set this year’s Big Give SA goal to $20,000 to ensure 15,000 kids and their teachers in San Antonio have the literacy resources and support they need,” explained Therese Shields, Regional Director of San Antonio, The Leaders Readers Network. TLRN operates with a unique model in supporting educators, student leaders, and families to increase access to diverse and culturally relevant books, assist teachers in promoting positive community support, and foster youth development through the co-led and designed programs of the Literacy Fellowship and Student Ambassador Project. In San Antonio, we're transforming education by boosting programs in San Antonio ISD, Edgewood ISD, and Northside ISD to improve teacher retention and literacy. San Antonio ISD and Edgewood ISD face alarmingly high teacher turnover rates of 19.1% and 23.7%, respectively, while Northside ISD is at 12.9%. Additionally, reading scores in these districts lag behind state averages, with only 28% of students in San Antonio ISD and 25% in Edgewood ISD reading at grade level.
