#MyGivingStory is about sharing a love of reading in my own classroom and beyond

My Giving Story is about connecting students to service, about sharing a love of reading, about literacy as justice.

My Giving Story is about giving students the opportunity to express their gratitude for their community through service. Facilitating moments of service is one of the most important and rewarding experiences in education. It’s about students realizing that they each have something to give: time, dedication, compassion. Giving back to your community doesn’t start one day in the future, but right now. Through writing letters to local first responders, raising money for new elementary books, and by committing time to read to younger children, my students were able to flex their giving muscles!

My Giving Story is about sharing a love of reading in my own classroom and beyond. The act of sharing a story with another is a powerful way to build relationships with others and yourself. During the pandemic, I was able to give each student a care package filled with brand new books and other treats. This point of connection was a lifeline for us all as we were able to talk about the stories we were sharing together.

My Giving Story is about connecting with like minded educators as we pursue literacy and equity for our students. I have been able to invite other teachers on my campus along on my service journey. We had teachers participate in our veteran/first responder shared literacy event as well as had brand new books donated to multiple teachers’ classrooms.

Through the connections and support it offers, The Leaders Readers Network has made it possible for me to make service a centerpiece of my classroom.
