The Leaders Readers Network Announces New Regional Directors to Boost Literacy Across Texas
Canyon, Texas — The Leaders Readers Network (TLRN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to cultivating future leaders and avid readers, is excited to announce the appointment of Mrs. Therese Shields as Regional Director for San Antonio and Mr. Patrick Miller as Regional Director for the Texas Panhandle.
Since 2012, TLRN has been a key player in addressing literacy challenges in underserved communities. With increasing support from foundations, individual donors, and heightened engagement from teachers and districts through the Literacy Fellowship, TLRN has been able to expand its reach and impact. By partnering with schools in the Texas Panhandle and San Antonio regions, TLRN has provided culturally diverse books, service projects, and essential resources to support early literacy in Title I schools. This work is crucial in addressing literacy disparities and promoting educational equity.
Mrs. Therese Shields, with her extensive experience in educational leadership within San Antonio ISD, is well-prepared to advance TLRN’s mission in San Antonio. Her background in leading large-scale teacher induction programs and professional development will be instrumental in boosting literacy for educators and students.
Mr. Patrick Miller brings a wealth of experience from Amarillo ISD, including roles as Assistant Principal and contributions to various nonprofit boards. His leadership in curriculum development and school improvement will be pivotal in addressing literacy concerns across the Texas Panhandle.
As Regional Directors Mr. Miller and Mrs. Shields will continue to further support district partnerships and book access to boost literacy in elementary and secondary classrooms, as well as support educators and classrooms through sponsorships and our volunteer reading program.
Chris McGilvery, Executive Director of The Leaders Readers Network, expressed enthusiasm about the new appointments: “We are thrilled to welcome Therese Shields and Patrick Miller as our new Regional Directors. Their expertise and dedication will significantly enhance our efforts to improve literacy outcomes and transform lives in their respective regions.”
Research underscores the critical importance of TLRN’s work in addressing literacy gaps. Studies indicate that high-quality, culturally relevant books and stable teaching environments are crucial for improving reading proficiency. In the Texas Panhandle, 57% of fourth graders and 41% of sixth graders met reading standards in the 2022 STAAR testing, with notable learning losses since pre-COVID. Similarly, in San Antonio, only 35% of third graders in San Antonio ISD and 29% in Edgewood ISD met grade-level reading benchmarks, falling below the state average of 53%. Northside ISD also faces challenges, with just 33% of students meeting proficiency. TLRN is committed to addressing these disparities through targeted interventions and community support.
For those interested in volunteering or sponsoring a classroom in Amarillo, Canyon, or San Antonio, please contact Therese Shields at therese@leadersreadersnetwork.org or Patrick Miller at patrick@leadersreadersnetwork.org.
