Help ensure #BooksForClassrooms

Why Access to Books Matters

In the U.S., 45% of children live in neighborhoods without access to libraries or bookstores (Weingarten, 2015). Many Title I schools and literacy programs cannot afford brand-new books at retail prices.

Students in poverty often have few or no books at home and limited access to a local library (Brooks-Gunn & Markman, 2005; Weingarten, 2015; Hoff, 2006; Korat et al., 2007), which contributes to reading achievement gaps (U.S. Department of Education, 2015).
