The MLK Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

At The Leaders Readers Network we are encouraging students across the nation to write poems for their teachers in order to fulfill Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community”. Teachers are working tirelessly to inspire, motivate, and encourage students during a historic school year where many are facing the challenges that come with a global pandemic.

Despite the challenges, we see so much good in our nation's schools, which exemplify Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Join The Leaders Readers Network to engage 500 student volunteers to write a poem to honor teachers (your teachers!) for all that they are doing during the 2020-2021 School Year!

Educators, we are here to support you through a historic school year. You are working hard, teaching in person and virtual. Your students see you working hard everyday. The purpose of this project is to promote peace and wellness for educators by helping promote inner and outer peace.

Educators, should align this project to their classroom poetry goals. Students will be able to write a poem to share gratitude, and encourage peace and wellness for teachers.

Students should write their own original poems and create a classroom “Peace and Wellness” door or wall to remind teachers that students care. Teachers, please encourage your students to submit their poems online. Parent permission for the poetry contest is required. Parents will have to provide their full name and initials in the Google Form.

The Leaders Readers Network will also recognize and award teachers who submit their “Peace and Wellness” door or wall created by students. We will award a catered dinner for one teacher in the following grade levels (K-3rd grade, 3-5th grade, 6-8 grade, 9-12 grade).

Click here to sign up your classroom to serve with The Leaders Readers Network on MLK Day. Teachers can rally their students to complete this project the week before MLK Day.

Teachers, once you sign up, we will send resources, curriculum, examples, etc. for you to implement this activity in your class. Thank you for being a part of our mission and projects. Students can earn volunteer hours for submitting their poem for our Peace and Wellness Mural. If you have any questions, email hello@leadersreadersnetwork.org.
