Hispanic Heritage Month in the Texas Panhandle

Texas Panhandle—Our annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration was a tremendous success in the Texas Panhandle due to the extraordinary efforts of 17 teachers across Bivins Elementary, Lakeview Elementary, Reeves-Hinger Elementary, and Canyon High School. Each year, we have the opportunity to share books which are reflective of the Hispanic cultural heritage thanks to the collaborative work of Melissa Garza and Rubi Perez among others. The five books selected for this year’s project included the following: The Pinata That The Farm Maiden Hung, Too Many Tamales, Spanish is the Language of My Family, Paletero Man, and Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You.

TLRN Presents: The Texas Panhandle Service Project

The Leaders Readers Network (TLRN) has launched an exciting new partnership with West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) aimed at enhancing literacy efforts in the Amarillo and Canyon areas. This collaboration connects local educators and students, fostering a love for reading and improving access to books within the community. Under the leadership of Patrick Miller, Regional Director for the Texas Panhandle, and Dr. Carolyn Baum, WTAMU professor and Attebury Honors Program Advisor, the initiative employs WTAMU's Attebury Honors Scholars as mentors and reading buddies. These dedicated students are stepping into local elementary schools, hosting engaging read-aloud sessions and providing books to young readers, ensuring every child has their very own copy.
